About myself

The Journey

My name is Justina Dresson and I am a Christian Birth Doula, but I support women of all backgrounds who are on the journey to motherhood. I decided to become a birth doula first because I wanted a career that would highlight my empathy and desire to serve others. However, as I have grown in my experience in this field I have come to the realization that I want to impact women’s lives to have a better birth experience than I had with my son and myself.

My experience with my own pregnancy was what you would normally see for a first time mother. Me and my husband were both inexperienced and not sure of certain signs we would see throughout the labor experience and that is what I intend to pass on to others. We were both very trusting in the medical personnel at the hospital we chose and that defiantly had an impact on the outcome. Now let me just say that I am a very strong supporter of the medical personnel at hospital’s and birth centers. Doctors and nurses have very hard and stressful environments to work in, but they also come with a down side. Between the long hours and multiple patients sometimes the professionals tend to take a shortcut method to the end result and although the experience can be painful it is also one to cherish to have as well as to be the building blocks to strong bonds between mother and child.

I had a very rough and long labor, but unfortunately I was given a choice and felt I had to take it or potentially face consequences. Having no real pain relief as part of my personal birth plan labor went into the 24 hour period. Most women usually go far beyond this point, however my physician informed us that because the water had broken the night previous we had a strong chance of infection if the baby was not delivered soon. I continued to labor on until my husband and I made the decision to have a C-Section birth. It was clear at that time that labor was going to take too long as I had barely dilated to 2 cm which is far from the goal.

The reason why I tell you this story of my experience is because my husband and I did not have the knowledge, nor did we have people we could rely on to make our choice our own rather than a scare tactic. From reading and doing multiple contacts with midwives I have found out that I could have possibly gone longer in labor with not a drastic chance of infection, but a minor to moderate chance. I feel without this information, or someone there to help comfort my husband and I with a difficult choice we tended to air on the lesser chance side as the consequences were explained to be very severe.

This is now where our story continues but in a different light. Through training and firsthand experience I am now a birth doula through the international doula institute and wish to parlay my knowledge as well as my empathy and encouragement to other mothers expecting their own little one or ones. If you would like to have a person who is willing to gift their knowledge as well as imbue their comfort and support both physically and emotionally please feel free to contact myself and we can begin a conversation into what you hope to achieve with your birth experience.
